36th AM Show Marked by Variety

The 36th Amusement Machine Show (AM Show), a show that exhibits the latest amusement machines in Japan and overseas under one roof, was held for four days, from September 17 (Thurs.) to September 20 (Sun.) at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center (Tokyo Big Sight), the same venue as last year's show.

This year's theme was "Amusement: The Cradle for a Creative Mind." The show was hosted by the Japan Amusement Machinery Manufacturers Association (JAMMA) and the Japan Amusement Park and Equipment Association (JAPEA) with support from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), the Ministry of Construction, the Leisure Development Center, and Nihon Keizai Shimbun Inc. Seventy-five companies exhibited in the show which featured 1,301 booths with 1,543 kinds of amusement machines (excluding component-related, panel exhibits, etc.). Due to thoroughgoing public relations before the show and a lower admission fee, this year's show had a total of 50,954 visitors during the four-day period, an increase of about 10,000 over last year. On the first and second days that were business days, 29,238 people visited the show. Many visitors appeared to be looking for items that point to post-Print Club trends.

Machines in the exhibit displayed an ever higher level of technology with the use of 3-D surround, computer graphics, and virtual reality, and many were simulation machines that provide powerful images and natural, realistic movement. At the same time, the show featured a wide-ranging variety of machines, and particularly noticeable were games that target popular family demand and are easy enough for novice players.
