■Mr. Manabe, Chairman of the AM Show Organizing Committee Speaks of His Aspirations
The 38th Amusement Machine Show will be held from September 21 (Thurs.) to 23 (Sat./national holiday) at Tokyo Big Sight, the same venue as last year. This year, 80 companies have submitted applications for the 1,088 booths (as of July 18). There will only be one public day to strengthen the business nature of the show during the three days. The organizer will also host an event to mark the show's role as a bridge leading from the twentieth into the twenty-first century.

Priority Given to Location Operators

With two months until the show, Mr. Katsuki Manabe, Chairman of the AM Show Organizing Committee spoke of his aspirations for this year's show, as follows.

* Contrary to our expectations, there were almost as many applications this year as last year. We were particularly reassured by applications from more than 21 non-members.

* In the past, the show itself grew in scale due to an increase in the number of participating companies that were suppliers. However, this show targets location operators because they evaluate machines with a critical eye. The show gives priority to having them view the show and aims to function as a forum where they can talk with makers about the future of amusement machines.

* As a show that bridges the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, there will be a themed exhibit by the organizers covering highlights of the twentieth century (explanation of the history of the amusement industry, panel exhibit of chronology, exhibit of past popular machines), a demonstration program on the future of the industry (JAMMA Network Concept that links game locations with an optical fiber network), and other programs.

* Simply improving technology is not enough to create hit amusement machines. While making machines with precision, it is also necessary to ensure that they appeal to the emotions with contemporary ideas. Past successes in our industry have been due to this effort. We should be more confident and give ourselves more credit.
