■Market Size of AM Industry Up 3.8% in Fiscal 2000 With Console machines Playing Role of Motive Force

The survey on the AM industry in fiscal year 2000, done by JAMMA, AOU (Amusement Machine Operators' Union) and NSA (Nihon shopping Center Amusement Park Operator's Association) has been completed. It was conducted on enterprises engaged in manufacture, sale and operation of coin-op amusement machines and makers of console game machines. Of the 1,052 enterprises asked to answer the questionnaire, irrespective of membership in the three groups, 300 companies responded.

The market size of the AM industry in fiscal 2000 expanded 3.8% over the previous year to ¥1,946,500 million, due to good sales of console game machines. The sales of coin-op amusement machines declined sharply by 23.8% from the previous year. Possible reasons for the decline are: absence of a big hit after the success of music game machines and the lack of effective countermeasures to cope with the decrease in the number of AM players, mainly those in their twenties, due to expanded functions of portable telephones and internet systems. Operation sales were down 3.7% from last fiscal year.
