I wish a very happy New Year to you all. Last year, we held the 40th annual Amusement Machine Show and during the passage of a long history, a wide variety of amusement machines made debut, including jukeboxes, merry -go-rounds, bowling game machines, medal games, video games, amusement venders, music games, card games, and so on. The amusement business has thus made great contriburinons to the development of Japan's indstrial technologies. Above all, the appearance of "space invader games" gave the industry a chance to open up the door to the overseas markets and encouraged the production of a great many video games. Thanks to the efforts and ingenuity of member enterprises, many great and hit products were born. They served as forerunners of household goods and public utilities that use a great number of semiconductors, thus contributing to the growth of the computer industry. It has been said for some years that our industry has entered an era of revolutionary changes. The reasons are said to be rapid proliferation and sophistication of console game machines, popularization of pocketable telephones, appearance of movable communication and game macnines, and diversified ways of utilizing the leisure time. Whatever the reasons may be, we, the people of the industry, should have the power to create original products, through combination of the industry's "intellectual property" accumulated through trial and error, failures and successes of individual enterprises on the one hand, and "cutting-edge" technologies on the other. There were already signs last year to indicate a bright future for the industry as the on-line game machines appeared in some arcades and won great popularity. I believe that the games can give joy to us and enrich our lives. I am also convinced that we should aim at the Renaissance in the games industry to create new games, which are "interesting," "enjoyable," "exciting" and may deserve Nobel Prizes. Now is the time for the younger generations who are the future carriers of the industry to rise up and do their very best. Before concluding my greetings, let me pray that the New Year will continue to be a year of leaping forward for all of you. |
