The Amusement Industry Annual Fact-Finding Survey (FY2002) Completed

|

The 10th fact-finding survey of the amusement machinery industry for FY2002, carried out by Japan Amusement Machinery Manufacturers Association (JAMMA), ALL NIPPON Amusement Machine Operators' Union (AOU) and Nihon Shopping Center Amusement Park Operators Association (NSA) has been completed and the findings were compiled in a report. As was done previously, the study included non-member companies as well as the registered members of the three organizations. With responses given by over 300 out of 856 companies surveyed, the report covers a broad range of statistics about the industry.
Overview of Survey Results
The survey, conducted between April 2002 and March 2003, shows that the overall earnings of the amusement machinery industry fell sharply to ¥2 trillion 26.7 billion (about US$18.7 billion), posting a 9.3% decline on a year-on-year basis. The market barely maintained the ¥2 trillion level achieved the previous year helped by the increase in sales of home video machines. The drop in the overall earnings is attributed to a steep decline in sales of the home video machines from ¥1.502 trillion in FY2001 to¥1.266 trillion in FY2002.

On the other hand, the total earnings of the amusement and arcade industry, consisting of earnings from equipment sales and the earnings from arcade operation, surged by more than 4% compared to the same period the previous year to ¥760 billion, marking the first increase in sales in 5 years.

The improvement in earnings was due to streamlining of operations through closing down unprofitable outlets and creating outlets in large-scale established stores with the aim of expanding the customer-base to include families and women.

It appears the worst is over for both the amusement equipment sales and the earnings from arcade operation.
